CALENDAR FOR WORKSHOPS AT TILT GALLERY
Saturday - Sunday, January 30 - 31, 2010; from 10 - 5 pm
Introduction to Digital Negatives and Cyanotype Printing Process
Instructor: Rachel Woodburn
In this beginning workshop, we will explore ways of combining Cyanotype historical process printing with technology to create digital negatives.
During this hands-on workshop, participants will enlarge negatives from digital files and traditional film. Demonstrations and instruction will be given on how to make simple digital negatives. We will create a few basic types of negatives and then experiment in contact printing them using a variety of papers and chemistry. Participants will work with their images taking them from digital files or scans to final Cyanotype prints. Explore creative possibilities and discover new ways to combine new technology with historical processes.
Cost: $175 (material included)
Note: Class limited to 10 students
You can registar (pdf or Word doc) and print out the form to be mailed.
Saturday - Sunday, February 27 - 28, 2010; from 10 - 5 pm
Platinum-Palladium Workshop
Instructor: Roger Palmenberg
This workshop will introduce the student to what has been referred to as one of the most beautiful and permanent photographic printing processes ever discovered.
This 19th century process is characterized by subtle tones, soft textures, and delicate highlights not obtainable through regular gelatin silver printing. The chemistry of printing with salts of platinum and/or palladium will be discussed and various techniques of coating papers will be demonstrated. This is a contact printing process so students will need to supply their own large format negatives, 4 x 5 or larger, either from original in camera negatives or enlarged duplicate negatives. Basic to intermediate darkroom knowledge is required for the workshop.
Cost: $175 (material included)
Note: Class limited to 10 students
You can registar (pdf or Word doc) and print out the form to be mailed.
Saturday, March 27, 2010; from 9 - 1 pm
Understanding and Collecting Historic Photographs
Instructor: Jeremy Rowe
This 4-hour workshop will provide an introduction to collecting photographs and photographica. It will begin with an overview of photographic history for collectors, future collectors, and others interested in photography, and will address 19th and early 20th century photography including:
- Cased images (Daguerreotypes, Ambrotypes, and Tintypes) – 1840 to1860
- Early paper processes and albumen prints (cartes-de-visites Cabinet and boudoir cards and mounted photographs) – 1855 to 1900
- Stereographs – 1855 to 1940
- Vernacular photographs and snapshots – 1885 to 1940
- Albums
- Photographic Postcards – 1900 to 1940
Cameras, viewers, photographica and related ephemera will also be discussed. The workshop will discuss sources and collecting organizations, and includes real examples of the photographic processes and hands-on session as well as PowerPoint presentation. The workshop will be highly interactive and will include time for discussion of items brought by participants.

Advanced Digital Negatives and Ziatype Printing Process
Instructor: Rachel Woodburn
In this advanced workshop we will explore new ways of combining Ziatype historical process printing with the technology to create digital negatives.
During this hands-on workshop, participants will mix their own chemistry; previous experience working with the alternative processes is essential. We will enlarge negatives from digital files and traditional film. Demonstrations and instruction will be given on how to manipulate and adjust the image to make precise digital negatives. We will experiment with different ways of making negatives and then contact print them using varying papers and chemistry. Participants will work with their digital negatives to create final Ziatype prints. Be ready to create, explore and have fun experimenting with new technologies and historical processes.
Cost: $175 (material included)
Note: Class limited to 10 students
You can registar (pdf or Word doc) and print out the form to be mailed.
